NORTHWEST RECREATION COMMUNITY ADVISORY GROUP & CALGARY NORTHWEST RECREATION CENTER SOCIETY UPDATE
FALL 2009
In November 2007, Calgary City Council allocated the investment of up to $301.5 million in principle for recreation and sport infrastructure, of which $210 million was allocated to the development of three new regional recreation facilities in the northeast, southeast and northwest.
Early in 2008 a group of northwest communities, formed the Calgary Northwest Recreation Centre Society (CNRCS), to pursue the possibility of becoming the development and/or operating group for the new northwest recreation facility.
CNRCS began acting as the Community Advisory Group, but this summer declared their intention to submit application to the Expression of Interest (EOI) process looking for partners interested in developing, governing and/or operating the northwest facility. In order to maintain a fair and transparent process for all applicants to the EOI, it was necessary for the CNRCS to discontinue as the Community Advisory Group.
The role of the Community Advisory Group is to help review existing research, compile recommendations and advise in the areas of community needs, stakeholder recognition, program development, design and construction of a recreation solution for northwest Calgary.
The new Community Advisory Group has been formed this fall while the CNRCS focuses on developing their application to the EOI process. The new Community Advisory Group includes community representation (including former CNRCS members) and representation from the Calgary Arts Development Authority and the Calgary Sport Council. The communities included in this communication, but not limited to include; Arbour Lake , Citadel, Edgemont, Greenwood /Greenbriar, Hamptons, Hawkwood, Kincora, Ranchlands Rocky Ridge/Royal Oak/ Royal Vista, Sagehill, Scenic Acres, Sherwood, Silver Springs, Symons Valley, Tuscany, Valley Ridge .
The Community Advisory Group will work with The City of Calgary to develop a plan that will help guide and direct the engagement activities along appropriate timelines coinciding with the project timelines, including final confirmation of the facility site.
The involvement and support of the Community Advisory Group will ensure the needs of northwest Calgary are strongly represented and a facility, that truly enriches the lives of Calgarians, is developed.
