Granting Renewal

Calgary Arts Development announced, in July
2007, an important step towards strengthening resources for the arts in Calgary: the start of a
process to renew and strengthen our granting programs. Through renewal we hope
to support and encourage the tremendous growth of Calgary's arts sector by building the best
municipal granting system in the country.

Building a strong program for the future will
require us to take a series of actions in the short-term to ensure an
appropriate amount of time to consult the community, develop new systems, align
our resources and ultimately implement any new programs that result. Changes to the operating grants program are
not something we take lightly, and our goal is to ensure minimal disruption for
Calgary's arts
organizations.

The attached booklet describes in detail how we
will be moving forward with the renewal process. As always, we invite you to
contact us directly to express any thoughts, questions or comments that you
have. For questions directly related to the renewal process and your grant,
please contact Karen Ball, Director of Community Investment, or Holly Simon,
Community Investment Officer, at 264-5330 or grants@calgaryartsdevelopment.com.

Creating in Calgary

The following article by Calgary Arts Development's President & CEO Terry Rock appeared on July 25, 2007 in the Calgary Herald.

Creating in Calgary: The Future of Calgary's Competitive Advantage

Creativity and innovation. Two words we’re going to hear more and more about in all cities, including in Calgary. Perhaps especially Calgary.

Charles Landry, urbanist and cultural planner for cities throughout the world, talks about fostering creativity in urban communities in his book The Creative City: A Toolkit for Urban Innovators. When he spent a week in Calgary last March, Landry challenged us to take stock of the energy and passion of Calgarians and ask one question every time we act: Is it good enough for Calgary? read more »

The Arts and The Art of City Making

The following appeared in the Calgary Herald Editorial Section on March 23, 2007:

Has Calgary reached a 'crisis of aspiration'? For a number of reasons, I'm inclined to say "Yes, we have!" Our ambitions for the city we live in are leading us to change the way we do things. The ways we use land, get around the city, treat the environment, care for the disadvantaged, embrace diversity and support arts and culture are all currently being rethought in Calgary. In these booming times, all of our opportunities and challenges can be overwhelming. But what better cause to rally around than the future of this dynamic city? read more »
